DA HAMMER ITP

Barleywine was first marketed in the USA in 1976. The words were merged from Barley wine which was a strong English Ale first sold in the UK back in 1870 by Bass. The thought was American regulators would take issue with “wine” in the description and either claim it violated a beer license or the brewers were trying to deceive the consumer. Thankfully, these exceptionally strong ales persist today, with American Barleywines not being shy about bringing malt complexity and classic American hop character in full force. Da Hammer ITP was brewed with our friends at New Realm and is named for Ed Hamrick who was both a pioneer in the Atlanta craft beer scene and also a world-class drummer. The ITP is Atlanta slang for “Inside the Perimeter” (I-285). Da Hammer pours a deep amber color. Despite the hop levels, the high alcohol causes the foam to drop quickly. Bursting with dark fruit, toffee and pleasant alcohol notes from the strong malt, the Centennial, Amarillo and Simcoe hops lend a very American character to the flavor and finish. Expect a pine and grapefruit depth when it is young, slowly yielding to sherry and stone fruit as it ages. This is one beer that gets better with age yet can’t be missed!
