Schwarzbier, literally known as Black Beer in Germany, has been brewed in Kulmbach for over 800 years. After an archeological find in 1935, it is now said to have been brewed there since 800 B.C. making it the world’s oldest continuously brewed beer. The style obviously changed over the centuries however the color has not. Schwarzbier, while dark in color, is not as dark or as overly roasty as a stout. Instead it dances on the razor’s edge with very nuanced flavors, emphasizing smoothness and drinkability over the more aggressive roasty edge of stout. We decided since we had already brewed three true-to-style German classics, we would get in the holiday spirit and pumpkin up our Schwarzbier. Dark yet fairly clear, our Schwarzbier combines light Pilsner, Munich and Vienna maltiness, chocolate notes, and a touch of spicy pumpkin deliciousness. The original is such a wonderfully drinkable beer, we wanted to enhance the entire experience rather than cover it up. Prost!
